Events & Things to Do in Southern Maine: May 2017

Yay!  May is finally here!  This is the month that Southern Maine’s seacoast reawakens and many seasonal favorites re-open.  Here are some ways to kick-off the season.

May 6, 2017| Check out the Annual May Day Festival in downtown Kennebunk. Activities at this family-oriented event typically include a farmers market, rock climbing wall, balloon art, juggling, demonstrations, safety fair, live music, crafts, bounce house, and more.  Parade on Main Street begins at 1:30 p.m.

May 13, 2017 | Cast your vote for Maine’s best chowder as restaurants and home cooks compete in the Annual Chowderfest on “The Pier” at Old Orchard Beach. 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Proceeds go to charity.

May 20, 2017| Enjoy music and sample beers from your choice of 30 microbreweries at the Annual Beerfest on “The Pier” at Old Orchard Beach.  12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  No cover charge.

May 17 – July 1, 2017 | See Mama Mia, the musical, at the Ogunquit Playhouse.

May 26 – 29, 2017 | Memorial Day Weekend – Go to the beach, BBQ with friends and family, and take time to honor those who have served to our country.

May 29, 2017 – Watch one of the many Memorial Day parades held in the area:

• The parade in Kennebunkport usually starts at 9:30 a.m. and marches through Dock Square and into Lower Village. Thirty minutes later, the parade moves to Cape Porpoise.
• Kennebunk’s parade kicks off at 2 p.m. and travels along Main Street.
• Wells and Ogunquit – The parade kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at the Wells High School on Sanford Road and continues to Ocean View Cemetery on Route 1 for a ceremony. The parade then reforms in Ogunquit and begins on Bourne Lane at 11:00 a.m. with ceremonies to follow.

All Month

Go out to eat!  Many seasonal favorites re-open in May, such as:

• Fisherman’s Catch for fried seafood in a fun and kitschy atmosphere
• Big Daddy’s for ice cream
• Bennett’s Store for cheese steaks and other delicious sub sandwiches
• Earth at Hidden Pond for fine dining

Go swimming!  When you rent Maine cottage (#52) at Seagull Inn and Condominiums in Wells during May, you’ll have access to an indoor, heated pool and hot tub.
